He played for Aston Villa from 1993 to 1997 and Middlesbrough from 1997 to 1999 and finished his career with West Bromwich Albion from 1999 to 2000. He finished his career with 52 goals in 638 games. Townsend represented the Republic of Ireland in international competition. He was named Chelsea Player of the Year and is a member of the Norwich City F.C. Hall of Fame and the FAI Hall of Fame.
